I'm no longer human, but I'm not a demon either. I can only move forwards! I'll become an exorcist! Blue Exorcist, also known as Ao no Exorcist, is an action comedy fantasy shonenmanga with Multiple Demographic Appeal by Katou Kazue. The story revolves around Rin Okumura, who starts out as a boy who is somewhat of a delinquent and as such gets into fights. He is usually at odds with his adoptive father, Father Shirou Fujimoto. One day while Rin goes to a job interview that Fujimoto 'encouraged' (read 'encouraged' as 'threw objects at') him to check out, he starts seeing little black 'bugs' and runs into a group of kids he fought the other day. To his surprise, one of the kids is now a demon. Just as the demon is about to kill him, blue flames surround his body and burn his attacker. The demon realizes that Rin is the one he has been searching for: the son of Satan. While Rin is in total shock and disbelief, Shiro Fujimoto comes and exorcises the demon. He then describes how demons come from a world called Gehenna and can cross into our world (Assiah) by possessing a vessel of sufficient strength. He takes Rin back to the house to give him a sword that seals his demon powers and see him off, but unfortunately, Rin thinks it's all bullcrap and accuses Shiro of throwing him out. Double unfortunately, Satan decides to come in and say hello. Rin saves himself by drawing the sword, but Father Fujimoto dies in the process. After the funeral, he is confronted by Mephisto, a member of the True Cross Order and a friend of Shiro's, and demands to join the True Cross Order and become an Exorcist. The series follows Rin's quest to become the strongest exorcist and to defeat Satan. It also sidetracks onto secondary characters, namely Yukio. Okumura, Shiemi. Moriyama, Shura. Kirigakure, Ryuuji. All of which are not exactly who you first think they are; Deconstructions, Reconstructions, Played With, and Subverted tropes abound here, especially in regards to characters. A 2. 5- episode anime adaptation with music by Hiroyuki Sawano began airing on April 1. You can find it on Viz Anime, Crunchyroll (free simulcast) and Hulu. The English dub can be seen on Neon Alley for the PS3 as of October 2, 2. It also is now available on Netflix with the option of either sub or dub. A movie came out in December 2. Toonami block as of February 2. A new anime covering the Impure King arc aired in 2. Winter 2. 01. 7 Anime lineup. After Fujimoto exorcised him, he mentioned that he could potentially get possessed again if he continued to give into his sinful behavior (and in the anime, he did). Those lines seemed to imply that he was going to be a recurring character and maybe even Rin's rival. However, he never appears again after his exorcism and the role of The Rival ended up going to Ryuji instead. Academy of Adventure: True Cross Academy, with demons showing up on the grounds, mysterious, possibly villainous teachers, and the True Cross Order having not only a base there, but a school for exorcists. Adaptation Expansion: The first half of the anime, before it diverges onto an anime- original story. The movie expanded on the Phantom Train omake. Notably, the mission goes much worse. Rin isn't able to destroy the train after Shiemi frees all the souls, and it manages to escape, causing a large amount of property damage. Rin and Shiemi are suspended for disobeying Yukio's orders, and Yukio never actually comes around to saying that Rin was correct in wanting to save all the souls on the train. After the fact he even tells Rin HE was in the wrong. And Yukio spends most of the movie hunting down what was left of the train. Added Alliterative Appeal: Arthur August(e/o) Angel. Adult Fear: Your adopted child is the biological son of the most powerful demon in existence and if you let your guard down for even one minute said demon will possess you and use your body to literally drag him down to hell. Your daughter has become a shut- in who only cares about her deceased grandmother's garden, and on top of that she can barely move due to demonic growths in her legs. All Religions Are True: The series mostly focus on Christianity, mainly Roman Catholicism, but there have been demons inspired by Shintoism, Fatal Verses from Buddhist sutras (at least Zen Buddhism anyways), even Greco- Roman minor deities. It was also said in the manga that almost all demons found in other religions are true, Satan just happens to be the lord of them all. And the Adventure Continues: In the anime at least. Animal Battle Aura: The hilarious Rin vs. Ryuji scenes in the anime have these. Rin is a golden tiger, Ryuji's a green- scaled Chinese dragon. Animal Motifs: Konekomaru Miwa and Mamushi Hojo. Anime Catholicism: The series uses Bible verses as spells. Combined that almost every preacher met is that of the badass variety, it can arguably be considered the Trope Codifier. Anthropomorphic Personification: Demons are revealed in the manga to have originally been concepts that resided in Gehenna. The growing numbers and advancement of humanity, however, caused them to gain physical form and with it develop ego. Unfortunately for the most powerful demons, the Kings, their new form forces a painful degradation of their bodies due to the power they wield. When the body dies they reincarnate into a new physical form only to repeat the cycle. Satan is the manifestation of Gehenna itself that all demons originate from. Anti Anti Christ: Rin is a good- hearted guy who wants to KICK SATAN'S (read: daddy's) ASS. As the Good Book Says: Certain Bible verses can be used to banish demons. The trick is knowing which Bible verse is required for which demon. One classmate, trapped by a ghoul, only knows that something from the Book of John can banish it. He recites the entire thing from memory, and it turns out it's the last line that banishes the ghoul. Barrier Maiden: Suguro Ryuji in the fight against the Impure King. Made fun of by Rin because the role is usually reserved for girls. Beach Episode: 1. Chapter 3. 5 to 3. Bedmate Reveal: After the battle with the Impure King, Rin wakes up to find Shiemi sleeping next to him. Berserk Button: Surprisingly, Takara manages to push Konekomaru's, sending the latter into a yelling spree. Resulting in a Get A Hold Of Yourself Man from Ryuji. BFS: Angel's sword isn't huge, but it's definitely the same thick . It backfires. Big Ol' Eyebrows: Kamiki Izumo, causing her to get the nickname Eyebrows. Big . Lampshaded by Gedouin, who compares his appearance to a shining star, complete with the sparkles. Bizarchitecture: True Cross Academy. The Order's main base in the Vatican seems to have weird design choices - what is with that big meeting room and table surrounded by huge black pits?! The Impure/Defilement King (a demon in the Decay domain) takes the form of a giant city. Too bad his name is rendered as . And demonic possession/attacks. Toudou can regenerate with Karura's power. He just likes to regenerate his hands and mouth first, to Yukio's abject horror. In chapter 5. 6 there are uber- zombies created by Dr. Gedouin vary in just how bad they are but one has a stack of noses running up one side of the body, ear- covered arms, eyes on the shoulders, a huge mouth, multiple arms on one side of the body, what look like smaller faces on the hips. Break the Haughty: When Izumo's confidence fails, her familiars try to kill her. Breaking Speech: To Yukio, from an exorcist who turned to The Dark Side. Apparently the guy fell behind his father and brother and after trying to live up to them, he resented them for it. Yukio declares he's different. Following that conversation, Saburota Toudou refined the speech, saying Yukio had no choice in his career path and he really feels he is just a tool made by his Father to protect Rin, so Yukio must've sometimes hated his Father and brother for pushing this burden onto him. Yukio then admits the guy is right, he hates and loves his brother. But then he says what he hates most of all is his own weaknesses in this matter. All while setting up a counter to trap Toudou. Further ramped Up to Eleven when Toudou regenerates gruesomely and taunts Yukio, happily stating Yukio's admitted self- loathing is the first step in becoming a demon. After this guy had identified his insecurity, strangled him, and then been exploded because of him, in the course of less than 1. Yukio takes this hard. When Shima's preparing to leave with his Illuminati cohorts in Chapter 4. Suguro didn't take it well. Gale tries this on Konekomaru. It works for a while, but they get over it. Breaking the Fourth Wall: Chapter 4. Mephisto explicitly holding a conversation with the reader about the plot and the nature of human desires. Bullying a Dragon: Rin was bullied and called a demon throughout his childhood due to his Super Strength and temper. Calling the Old Man Out: Rin to Satan. This style means that the Kamiki family's very similar looks stand out. They look like they could be clones in fact! Cerebus Syndrome: The Izumo Rescue arc is horrifying compared to those which proceeded it. As of this writing, it looks like the series is going full Darker and Edgier. To be fair, the series started with Satan possessing Rin's foster father and then ripping off his fingers before going on to toss Rin into a creepy gate. The dark aspects are just now finally starting to take center stage. Boomerang Cerebus Syndrome perhaps? Chekhov's Gun: The plant nutrient bullets in ch. Yukio uses them once again to trick a demon though aren't as an effective a trick that time. Chekhov's Gunman: The Video Game Dude and Bunny Rabbit Puppet Kid. Bunny Rabbit Puppet Kid is actually Takara Nemu, a fully trained exorcist, with the same rank as Shura (Upper- first class), hired by Mephisto to act as a . And it renders half of the previous season noncanon without giving any nods to it. I just finished Blue Exorcist like an hour ago, and was excited for the sequel, only to find out that it's going back a few pages. I only heard about the hype around the sequel and decided I'd watch the original, then follow up with the sequel. I didn't do any research at all. Anyway, I'm saying you're awesome because most people react negatively to corrections. I love when I'm corrected, if the correction is accurate that is, because it means I just learned something new. On one hand, I get the argument . I just thought I'd point that out. Anime - Ao no Exorcist . Then I saw the anime team decided to break Rin's sword. Sheezus, the mangaka herself hasn't done that kind of arc, it's still way in the future for her. It's too sudden for Rin to lose everything including permanent sanity, it's bad enough what he's lost by this point in the manga. Then I watched it. So, the first half of the episode was hopelessly extended with poor animation, they didn't need to explain the training arc for 5 minutes when they could've wrapped it up last episode and ended on Rin's little . Oh yeah, and so many ship teases - got my Bonx. Rin and Shiemix. Rin, and then learned of Shiemix. Shima which was cute. But I got very happy at Shura's snake and the seal around the camp, because it was oh- so- pwetty! Such a beautiful explosion and snake! They did Shura's banter with Rin well too. Shiemi and Takara were excellent. So I guess the foregrounds were perfect, just the backgrounds rubbed me wrong, because all the scenes were pretty much perfect. Well, I think they shoulda done Shima's comment on . Gods I really loathed Amaimon. I got my fill of demonic Rin that was terribly missing from the anime thus far. If the episode was just the first 3/4, I woulda rated it 7/1. The last quarter raised it to a 1. Rin lose it, Shura's comments on ? In fact, the history of Kurikara might be entirely different than from the manga. The next 1. 0 episodes will probably be dealing with resealing Rin's flames the sword, ending in a finale which will definitely pull The Power Of Friendship. This is most likely because the Kyoto arc took 4- 5 chapters to set up. I'm not too worried. The thing I'm most scared of is if they decide to make Yukio save Rin. Will Rin completely be unsealed or are they just teasing us?
